Rwanda, one of the smallest countries on the African continent and found in the eastern part on Africa, is largely covered by mountainous landscape and rolling hills hence being referred to as the “land of a thousand hills”. Bordered by Uganda in the North, Tanzania in the east, Democratic republic of Congo in the west and Burundi in the south.

A mountain chain runs across from the North to south dividing the country, this chain of mountains is referred to as Virunga Mountains, with its peak at Mt. Karisimbi in the North and Mt. Karisimbi in the south, this mountain holds Lake Kivu, Rwanda’s largest water body.

Gorilla Trekking in Rwanda

This the major and most valuable tourist activity in Rwanda right now, being home to mountain gorillas has been a great achievement and boosted Rwanda’s tourism. Gorillas can be found in the Volcanoes National Park which is part of the Virunga Mountain ranges that has a population of over 1000 mountain gorillas.

While trekking the gorillas, you are able to come across more than twelve endangered families such as Kwisanga, Amahoro, Umubano, Susa, Isimbi, Pablo, Titus, Ntambara, Musirikare, Sabyinyo, Agashya, Kwintonda, Hirwa, Muhoza and Igisha among others.

Gorilla trekking can be done at both Mt. Bisoke and Karisimbi which are a part of the Volcanoes National Park and it does come at an affordable cost of $1500 per head.

Trekking gorillas is fun because you get to see how they behave and interact with nature in their daily lives.

Golden Monkey Trekking in Rwanda

Also known as Cercopithecus Mitis Kandti in the scientific language, are a subspecies of the Blue Monkey. They are found in the higher altitudes of Volcanoes National Park area. While trekking them, you get to see how playful they are as they jump from one tree to another.

Trekking golden monkeys can be done at the foot of Mt. Sabyinyo where one of the two habituated groups call home. A golden monkey trek is done in the morning, same applies to gorilla trekking.

Canopy Walk Adventure in Rwanda

This is one of the latest inventions in Rwanda’s tourism found in Nyungwe National Park, established in 2010 with the aim of boosting tourism both domestically and internationally. An aerial bridge setup within the canopy of trees is an exciting activity to enjoy as you visit the tropical forests, while here you get to enjoy an aerial view of the thick forest, different monkey species within the trees such as red-tailed monkeys, blue monkeys and even the rarest Rwenzori Columbus.

The canopy is 60 meters above the forest floor and stretches 100 meters across the forest, it has three sections with the highest being the middle one in that while there you can’t even see the forest floor. The canopy has gained allot of popularity among tourist as people come from all over the world to experience this exciting adventure. It has been used for honeymoon adventures, marriage proposals and many other exciting aspects in life.

Fun fact is that this is the only canopy walk found in the whole of East Africa.

Big 5 Animals

These are the fiercest animals in the wild and can only be found in Akagera National Park. Rhinos, Leopards, Elephants, Buffalos and definitely the “King of the Juggle” the Lions make up the big 5 safari animals.

These can be seen during park activities like game drives, you get to see how they co-exist with other animals in the wild and how they behave differently.

Boat Cruises

One of the most fascinating activities that visitors engage in as they sail the African waters. You can have a boat ride on Lake Ihema found in Akagera National Park, while sailing your worries away, you get an opportunity to site hippos both in the water and on the sandy beaches, crocodiles too along the shores resting comfortably.

Bird lovers get to watch different bird species as they fly across the lake such as Herons, Kingfisher, Ibises and many more. A boat cruise also lets you see the big 5 animals as they enjoy the land.

Lake Kivu also offers boat rides on its beautiful and calm waters, this is found on the border of D.R. Congo.

Rwandan Culture and Food

Different traditions are carried out in Rwanda such as the Intore Dance, performed by dance troops, this dance technique or style involves jumping so hard. You can see them perform at cultural villages, museums, hotels and lodges.

Imigongo a traditional activity that involves drawing paintings using cow dung, done by a local village member near the Tanzanian border, these drawings are white and black and they are beautifully made. Such works can be bought all over the country in the markets.

The staple food in Rwanda is Irish Potatoes, get to enjoy this delicacy prepared in all different ways, plantain is also grown in the rich soils of Rwanda, not forgetting milk from the locally breed cattle.

The rich fertile soils support growth of different foods like sweet potatoes, cassava, rice and tea which are enjoyed by the locals.
